Jan, you run Stretch First together with your good friend Rob. When did you guys start putting on the events?
We’ve been doing Stretch for just coming up to a year. I lose track actually. I think just over a year. It’s been a crazy year where we’ve got up to all sorts of stuff with Stretch and individually. It’s been really, really good fun.
Most people who decide that they’re going to put on an event, opt for the larger club nights. What was it that you made you guys decide to go with a “warm up” party?
It was mainly the vibe and money. To put on a massive club night you need a lot of money upfront and then you need to charge your mates a lot of money to cover your costs. You obviously want more than just your mates coming down to a club venue because otherwise you won’t make enough money to cover your costs. There’s then a lot more pressure on to get people involved and you end up having to get more and more people involved to give it momentum and get it going. We just had the idea of a nice chilled vibe that people could come down to and warm up before going out, and get into the same mindset as everybody else there.
If you could throw a party anywhere in the world, where would it be?
There are so many places. Miami’s awesome, and there’s some really cool stuff going on in Dubai, and some great clubs in Australia, which is where Rob’s from. We’re looking at maybe going over there and maybe doing a tour, but for me it has to be Ibiza. El Divino’s got a great view and a really awesome set up. The way you’re chucked out into the port and the water, and you can walk around the club on the outside and sit almost on the water, is really cool. Ultimately, though it would have to be Pacha, Ibiza. It’s the pinnacle of a clubbing experience. It’s such a cool vibe in there, you’ve got people from 18 to 80 rocking it and having an awesome time. It’s just a really special place.
Your currently working on some of your own productions in the studio. When did you get into production?
It was about 6 months ago. Rob had been working on some experimental stuff. He loves his music, and will put his stuff out there whether people like it or not. We go talking and his production work was amazing. What he was doing, I wanted a piece of it. It is the kind of thing that I really wanted to do. It’s great playing other peoples music and playing it to people who enjoy it, but it’s another thing to actually make your own music and then see the response that people have to it. That’s another level of excitement.
