Hoi Polloi: Party with friends - old and new!
By admin on May 28, 2008 in Events
Started in 2007, Hoi Polloi is fast establishing a name for itself as South London’s sexiest party. Every event brings the latest House Music, up-and-coming DJs, uplifting atmosphere and party environment that London’s clubbing elite deserve. Hoi Polloi pride themselves on being about great music and great times, creating fun and friendly dance floors where people can party with friends - old and new.
We managed to catch a few minutes with promoter Kate Auborn to find out what Hoi Polloi is all about.
The following is a transcript of selected questions within the interview. To hear the full interview, please download the audio file using the “Quick links” box at the top right of this page.
Kate, you’ve been running Hoi Polloi for about a year. How did the idea for the night come about?
The idea came about primarily from my own clubbing experience over the last 10 - 12 years. I’ve also worked in PR/marketing and have done event management for quite some time. I’ve also gone to lots of parties at the weekends and have seen how other people do it and thought to myself that I’d do things differently, so decided to start my own night. I started promoting at first with other people and off of the back of that started Hoi Polloi.
Both you and Master K, aside from running Hoi Polloi, also promote the “Shush!” parties which are a more underground event. Can you tell us a bit about what “Shush!” is?
Shush is the sister party of Hoi Polloi. It’s our underground roots. We run the two parties together, hand in hand. They both have the same outlook, but Hoi Polloi is more mainstream, whereas Shush operates in different venues, is slightly more underground and it’s also slightly smaller. Shush is essentially a party. We focus on the small things like giving out party bags, badges, CDs and sweets. But it essentially works the same way as Hoi Polloi, we have the same resident DJs, but it has a slightly different atmosphere. We had our last event at SE One, Deep Blue, on Saturday, which was really successful. The parties, however, mainly reside at Corsica Studios, which is where we started about 2 years ago. The Shush parties are now being run 3 times a year as there has been more demand for them recently.
What’s the best thing about House music in London?
The best thing about House music right now, is probably the best thing that has always been about House music, and that’s just that it brings everybody together and it’s upbeat, fun and you can just have a great time. I think House music is just a positive thing.
If you had to pick, from your years of clubbing and throwing events, a single moment that sticks out in your mind, what would it be?
I think I’d pick the night we did the second event that we hosted at Turnmills for Hoi Polloi. We hosted a room there and the atmosphere was just outstanding. There are some videos from the night on our facebook page that people can check out if they’re interested. It was just a really good vibe and the room was packed all night. Everybody had a good time and the feedback that I’ve had from people since has been great. Loads of people have said it was the best night that they’ve ever had and hearing feedback like that really makes it all worthwhile. I’ve overheard people in the toilets saying that the Hoi Polloi night that they went to at Turnmills was really good, and it’s really nice to know that other people are enjoying my parties as much as I do. It was a nice way to leave Turnmills before the closure in March. It’s a lasting memory for me, and Turnmills was my favourite venue, so I’m really pleased that we got Hoi Polloi in there before the closure.
