Workshy is a brand new night starting up in London this month and today we’re joined by Rene the promoter behind the nights. Workshy is your new night, launching at Pacha on the 27th June, what motivated you to start a new night in London?
I’ve always had promotion blood running through my veins. I ran my own night called Decorum about 10 years ago now. We launched that at Heaven and moved to The Mass in Brixton. WE only did about 3 parties over an 18 month period but it enabled me to cut my teeth and from there I went on to be a promotions manager for various different events and promotions/small bars and more recently a promotions/tour manager for Glasshouse in Leeds. When that finished I decided it was time for me to concentrate on setting my own night up, and Workshy Nights was born from that.
So you’re launching your night at Pacha London in conjunction with the Twisted Disco guys who have a monthly night there. How did that partnership come about?
Well I’d originally found a club in South East London, but that fell through right at the last minute. Unfortunately these things happen, it wasn’t anybody’s fault in particular, but I had already launched the promotional campaign, so rather than cancel the night, which for obvious reasons didn’t want to do, I went on the search for another venue. It was just by luck that a friend of mine new the guy who runs Twisted Disco and I emailed him on the day that he was going to print with his flyers. So he was happy for me to come on board and host the global room at Pacha. I always say that things happen for a reason, and this is a great opportunity for Workshy.
What have been your musical influences as a DJ and a promoter?
I grew up in a household where my mum always listened to 60’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, she’s a big Garth Brooks fan, so Country & Western and Rock ‘n’ Roll, whilst my father was always into classical music. That’s certainly where me love for trance came from with classical music. There are so many trance tracks influenced by classical music, which just remind me of my upbringing and background. I also love electro, rock, indie mash-ups and I think that all stems from what I was brought up with. I also went through a heavy metal stage as a teenager, I was into Iron Maiden and Metallica, which then led onto the dance stuff and the early rave scene.
I’m curious to know, as a promoter and a DJ, what do you think makes a great venue?
You swine! What a question. I have to be honest in this answer, and I don’t think I’ll answer it particularly well, but I think it’s a 50/50 marriage between promoter and venue. Time and time again you see great promoters have a long term residency with a particular club, and when they move to another club, for whatever reason, the night seems to die. If you’re going to take your promotion on tour it’s imperative that you find the right venue, you can’t just throw your night into any venue. Pacha is certainly a perfect venue, I believe, fro Workshy nights and our branding structure.
